The story takes place in a futuristic city within a skyscraper. The protagonist is an employee of The Calculator Company. Due to owing a massive debt to the company, he has no choice but to apply to work in the company's Calculation Tower for an intensive two-month period. During these two months, he will be confined to a room provided by the company, engaging in repetitive work day after day. The company promises that after these two months, his debt will be cleared, and he will be able to return home and reunite with his family.
